----------- BRENTY'S 04 -----------
Best Animated Movie
Chicken Little
The Corpse Bride
Madagascar
Robots
Wallace and Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit
Winner: Wallace and Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit
Honestly, I didn't see as many animated movies these year as I should have, and Wallace and Gromit was the only one I actually saw, but I have no doubt that none of the other movies could top it. Cheese!
Best Kids Live Action
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory
Dreamer: Inspired by a True Story
Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire
Millions
Sky High
Winner: Sky High
This was actually the genre that I probably watched the most of this past year. I have no explanation but it's the truth. And while there were many solid selections, Sky High was just unbelievably cool.
Best Comic Book Movie
Batman Begins
Elektra
Fantastic Four
A History of Violence
Sin City
Winner: Batman Begins
Batman Begins was the Batman movie we've all been waiting for. The best in the Batman series and very faithful to the Batman character.
Best Sci-Fi/Fantasy
Aeon Flux
The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy
Serenity
Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith
War of the Worlds
Winner: Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith
While Star Wars Episode III was not an absolute perfect movie, it was a very good sci-fi movie and a fitting ending to the Star Wars movie universe.
Best Horror/Thriller
The Devil's Rejects
Hide and Seek
Red Eye
The Ring Two
Saw II
Winner: Saw II
I didn't get too say as many of the Horror movies as I wanted to this year, but the best was Saw II as it was a fitting sequel to an awesome movie.
Best Action/Adventure
Batman Begins
Jarhead
King Kong
Mr. and Mrs. Smith
Sin City
Winner: Sin City
While this was originally going to be the best comic book movie of the year, because it was, I also felt it to be the best action movie of the year, so I decided to give it this award because it deserves as many props as I can give it.
Best Drama
Brokeback Mountain
Elizabethtown
A History of Violence
The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants
Walk the Line
Winner: The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants
A good year for drama movies, but there's just something about that pair of pants that it just feels wrong to give it to any other movie.
Best Comedy
The 40-Year-Old Virgin
Just Friends
The Ringer
Waiting...
Wedding Crashers
Winner: The 40-Year-Old Virgin
This was probably the easiest category to award because The 40-Year-Old Virgin was not only the funniest movie of the year but possibly that I've ever seen. Steve Carell was absolutely hilarious and did a great job with the character and he had a great supporting cast including the amazing Seth Rogen and Paul Rudd, it can't get much better.
Best Movie
The 40-Year-Old Virgin
Batman Begins
King Kong
Serenity
Sin City
Winner: Serenity
The big screen version of the television show, Firefly, couldn't have been done any better. It had everything you could possibly want in a movie, comedy, drama, action, a little bit of horror and a whole lot of that special Whedon touch.
Best Actress
Jessica Alba - Sin City/Into the Blue/Fantastic Four
Alexis Bledel - The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants/Sin City
Summer Glau - Serenity
Rachel McAdams - Red Eye/Wedding Crashers
Naomi Watts - King Kong
Winner: Rachel McAdams
While Red Eye was not a Brenty Award winner, Rachel McAdams deserved to be with her tremendous performance in this movie, as well as roles in Wedding Crashers and The Family Stone. She's been a favorite of mine for a few years now and was deserving of a Brenty Award with a fine year of work.
Best Actor
Christian Bale - Batman Begins
Steve Carrell - The 40-Year-Old Virgin
Johnny Depp - Charlie and the Chocolate Factory
Ryan Reynolds - Just Friends/Waiting...
Bruce Willis - Hostage/Sin City
Winner: Steve Carrell
While Carell had some help from his co-stars, his ability to make this character feel so real without making him pathetic was genius. It certainly didn't hurt any that he was genius in The Office, granted I don't like to let TV influence my decisions, but he's been brilliant in everything that he's done this year.
Best Director
Peter Jackson - King Kong
George Lucas - Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith
Christopher Nolan - Batman Begins
Robert Rodriguez/Frank Miller - Sin City
Joss Whedon - Serenity
Winner: Robert Rodriguez/Frank Miller
The battle of Robert Rodriguez with the director's guild to get Frank Miller listed as a co-director for Sin City was worth it. Sin City turned out better then anyone could have expected and was the visual treat of the year 2005.
